When Hon was making his arcade machine, this is the one game I requested! The soundtrack, the hat as a weapon, it’s amazing!

Oh Lord. Why did no one tell me about this shoot before.

“Poor little librarians of the world, those girls, secretly lovely, their looks marred forever by the cruelty of a pair of big dark eyeglasses!”
— Michael Chabon, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay
Us Sydneysiders have a habit of crying cold when, compared to the rest of the world, our winter weather is quite bearable. Melbournites, for example, not only have to deal with temperatures under 10 degrees on most days, but are also dealing with a massive swine flu breakout, labelling the city as the Swine Flu capital of Australia. And guess what? It’s not even snowing here. I have lived in Sydney for 6 or more winters without even a heater (although a hot water bottle is a must).
I think we all need to suck it up, put our beanies and berets on, and enjoy the cold weather. I know I wasn’t here for summer, but I remember a lot of you complaining about the 40 degree days (and with reason!) and coming from Japanese winter, this ain’t half bad!
AND, if it wasn’t so cold, going ice-skating in the city this weekend wouldn’t be half as cool. I am not sure if there are tickets left for the ice rink, but you should try to check out the Winter Festival. You never know, the cold may grow on you!

Cry Freedom?
I remember reading Cry Freedom, The Biography of Steve Biko, when I was about 12. Steve Biko was an anti-apartheid activist in South Africa in the 1960s and 1970s. He died in custody in 1977 due to massive head injuries and was subjected to a 1500km drive in the back of a landrover, naked, before he passed away in a Pretoria Prison.
Reading the news today of the Indigenous Australian Elder (his family wants him to be refered to as Mr. Ward) who has died, basically, by being burnt alive in the back of police van in Western Australia, brings back these memories. Except this is not 1970’s Apartheid South Africa. This is 2009, Australia.
